MARINE CONCRETE
A Case Study on Thi Vai – Cai Mep Container Port, Vietnam
High Durability Concrete For Harsh Environment
Sulphate Resistant Concrete
Low Permeability Concrete
Saigon International Terminals Vietnam (SITV) is developing a container port at Thi Vai – Cai Mep, Ba Ria Vung Tau Province, as an entry point for international container traffic to southern Vietnam. SITV is a member of Hutchison Port Holdings - the world’s leading port investor, developer and operator with investment portfolio of 50 ports in 25 countries worldwide. The new SITV container port development consists of 3 berths along 730m of quay, and is able to handle vessels of up to 60,000DWT.
THE CLIENT:
SITV began to develop the project to facilitate efficient logistics in the region. The main contractor, China Harbour Engineering, was in charge of finding a reliable supplier to meet all deadlines and the project’s strict technical requirements while maximizing the longevity of the port infrastructure.
THE CHALLENGE
The main challenge included continually supplying a suitable blend of cement to produce concrete with a low permeability to chlorides and a high resistance to sulphates, throughout the duration of the project.
THE SOLUTION:
To meet the demanding standards, a durable concrete solution was developed usng cement designed for concrete with high durability requirements and for chemically aggressive environments (seawater, sulphates, acids, chlorides etc) together with an optimized mix design.
BENEFITS OF HIGH DURABILITY CEMENT:
1. LONG-TERM DURABILITY of the concrete because of the low concrete permeability that protects against aggressive elements (chlorides, acids, salts, low pH, etc.).
2. RELIABLE SOLUTIONS for the project owner.
3. OPTIMISED CEMENT COST in the concrete.
4. GREEN features as the cement contains a pre-consumer recycled content (from Slag) greater than 35% and thus, contributes to achieve points in the credit M-2 Recycled Content of LOTUS Non-Residential V2. Compliance & Certifications of the cement meets both the Vietnamese standard TCVN 6067:2004 and the international standard ASTM C1157:2008 type HS. together with an optimized mix design.
STRATEGIES TO ACHIEVE DESIRED TARGETS included:
• Performing regular 6-months testing to prove resistance to sulphates.
• Applying grade 45MPa concrete for the Jetty including the precast elements and the jetty site.
• Applying grade 30MPa concrete for the container base.
